Israel to abandon the West Bank?

Posted by brittgillette on January 22nd, 2007

Israel's West BankAccording to World Net Daily, an unnamed source close to European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana claims there will be a “historic political evolution and movement in negotiations in the next few weeks and few months, unseen since the Camp David peace talks in 2000.” The rumor is that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is involved in negotiations for an Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank, a withdrawal to be mediated by Egypt and the European Union. Under the rumored agreement, most of the West Bank will be handed over Palestinian Authority President Mahmound Abbas. Jordan and the EU will oversee the transition from Israeli control to that of the Palestinian security forces. Thus continues the latest episode in the “land for peace” saga, which should more aptly be labeled as appeasement. Although some segments of the political leadership of the Palestinian Authority may genuinely seek peace, the official party line of Hamas and Israel’s myriad enemies is nothing less than total annihilation of Israel and the Jewish people.

Could this be the long ago prophesied 7-year covenant foreseen by the prophet Daniel? If not, it most certainly foreshadows events yet to come. The most interesting part of this news report is the European Union’s lead role in brokering this plan. In 2000, the United States took the lead in the “peace talks.” Now, it is the European Union which is flexing its foreign policy muscle. Coming on the heels of further economic integration on the Continent, calls for a unified military and foreign policy, and more than three years of the euro’s supremacy over the dollar, it seems clear that the European Union is emerging as a superpower more than capable of contending with the United States.

More than 2,500 years ago, the prophets Daniel and Zechariah foresaw these events, cataloguing the rise of ancient Rome as a world power (Daniel 2:40-43) and the position of Israel as a “burden for the world” in the last days (Zechariah 12:3). Along with the existence of Israel itself, these are just a few of the many reasons for believing the return of Christ is near and at hand.
