Gingrich: Prepare for “Greater Dictatorial Societies”
Posted by brittgillette on February 3rd, 2007
Newt Gingrich has published some comments delivered at last week’s 7th Herzliya Conference in Israel . Most of the buzz surrounding Newt’s speech stems from his dire warning of multiple Israeli or American cities being destroyed within a 24-hour period. But the most frightening reference in this speech isn’t to nuclear terrorism, but rather the prospect of “greater dictatorial societies.”
According to Gingrich, the government of the United States is weak and ill-prepared for the challenge of nuclear terrorism. So unprepared in fact, that he sees America compromising freedom in exchange for the promise of security. As Gingrich states, “If two or three cities are destroyed because of terrorism both the US and Israel ’s democracy will be eroded and both will become greater dictatorial societies.” As an insider at the highest levels of our government for the past 30 years, Gingrich should know as well as anyone our capacity for handling such a crisis, and his assessment should trigger serious attention.
Looking at America today, I fear for our country. The word “republic” was long ago replaced by “democracy” in our political dialogue, and freedom is rarely paid lip service, much less integrated into public policy. Too many Americans know everything about the candidates on American Idol, but nothing about the candidates for Congress and the presidency. This, in and of itself, is not a problem. What is a problem is that those same people vote. This increasingly ignorant and apathetic populace, along with a media that’s taken the side of a specific political party and our constant calls for security over freedom, should prompt us to prepare for the worst.
Conditions are ripe for the rise of dictatorship in America . Plato’s Republic describes a republican government as one that, over time, slowly devolves into democracy, oligarchy, and finally, dictatorship. True republican government ended in America years ago. Today, elected politicians substitute public polling data for personal principle, and the rare few who refuse, such as George W. Bush, are relentlessly derided for not “listening to the voice of the people.” In today’s America, the Roman mob seems alive and well. Terrorism coupled with weapons of mass destruction might be the straw that breaks the back of democratic government.
According to the Bible, in the last days, the world will have one government, and it will not be democratic. It will be a dictatorship ruled with an iron fist. But I’m not worried. Why? I intend to trade in this government for a benevolent dictatorship. One ruled by Christ. It will be perfect and everlasting, and all are invited. If you feel burdened by the things of this world, please consider accepting the invitation of Christ.
